Christchurch, what a great place to live.
We are pretty spoilt when it comes to winter in Christchurch with our mountains to the sea landscape. Here are just some of the things we love about winter in Canterbury, all of which make it a great place to live.
Snow sports! With Mt Hutt just a 90-minute drive away, it’s no wonder Christchurch locals love their snow sports. But there’s also Hurunui, near Hamner Springs where you can follow your day on the snow with a reviving soak in the springs. And then there’s the epic “Selwyn Six” - Porters Ski Area, Mount Cheeseman, Temple Basin, Mount Olympus, Broken River and Craigieburn. All within easy drive of the city, and between them catering of all skill levels and types of snow sports. Visit www.christchurchnz.com to find out more.
Wine and dine. Take your pick from some of the city’s cozy food and beverage hot spots to keep yourself warm and full of tasty comfort food. How about a cocktail and a hearty meal in front of the fire at No.4 gastropub in Merivale? Or indulge in high tea at The George? Perhaps a whisky or house brewed beer at the legendary Pomeroy? We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to spot for hunkering down on a cold day.
Night skies. Crisp clear winter nights are a great time to do some stargazing in Canterbury. To see some of the best, clearest night skies in the world make the trip to Mt John near Tekapo, but you can also do some guided stargazing from Akaroa. For details visit www.akaroa.com.
